Voce nasalmente acuta, ricca di quella grinta un po’ generica che fa sobbalzare i seggiolini di x factor; storia alle spalle intrisa di pietas da tv del dolore (sembra che per colpa di una malattia stesse per tirare il calzino a soli 22 anni); già vincitore di dischi d’oro e candidato ai Brit Award col precedente debutto del 2019 e altre amenità biografiche assortite metterebbero subito in fuga qualsiasi lettore di questa rivista, anche il più ben predisposto. Ma se volete provare a tagliare questa ingombrante patina che ammanta lo scozzese per vedere cosa c’è sotto troverete un disco pop/rock sfarzoso figlio dell’epica da stadio Springsteen/U2/ArcadeFire contemplante melodie sciroppate, sax arrapanti e ammiccanti tessiture intrise di xilofoni e tanto soul bianco (mettiamoci dentro anche il conterraneo Nutini). Senza troppe pretese provateci: vi ritroverete compiaciuti a canticchiare sovrappensiero, magari mentre state tornando a casa dopo una dura giornata di lavoro, almeno tre o quattro canzoncine cariche di pathos niente affatto disdicevoli. Contro il logorio della vita moderna (ma non troppo). (6/7) Marco Giappichini   

Girl in Red • If I Could Make It Go Quiet / Alfie Templeman • Forever Isn’t Long Enough

Etichette come la AWAL cercano di vivacizzare il saturo mercato musicale per giovani alternativi-generici vampirizzando le spinte e gli umori che provengono da un certo tipo di indie-pop elettronico fichetto (un po’ estroverso e un po’ da cameretta) shakerandolo e normalizzandolo. Il clamoroso successo di Billie Eilish ha acuito questo processo contribuendo a creare una pletora di cloni teen-pop spesso indistinguibili gli uni dagli altri. Emerge sicuramente da questa marmaglia la norvegese Marie Ulven Ringheim in arte Girl in Red (nata nel 1999) che addirittura ruba a Eilish il di lei fratello Finneas e lo mette alla produzione (guardatelo all’opera nel bel doc. “Billie Eilish: The World's a Little Blurry” e capirete bene chi si celi dietro il boom della sorellina). Il successo di una manciata di precedenti singoli ha reso attesissimo questo “If I Could Make It Go Quiet” (AWAL Recordings Ltd • 11t-33:10), sorta di operetta morale che riassume l’anno appena trascorso da Marie che nel frattempo chiusa nella sua stanza si è cibata, come fosse junk-food, di tutto quello che ha trovato in giro tra web e Tv: urban-pop con tanto di chitarrine flanger ipnagogiche (. detta Period), fumettoso electro-punk sfacciatamente sbarazzino (You Stupid Bitch), hip-pop contro il logorio della vita moderna (Serotonin), hit ispirate a “trasgressivi” serial (Rue è nata vedendo Euphoria). Sinceramente non esaltante quanto l’originale a cui aspira ma, riaggiornata la formula teen-rock che sancì vent’anni fa il successo di fanciulle come Avril Lavigne o Pink, c’è una sincerità inquieta e una certa freschezza compositiva che lo differenzia da prodotti pop coevi costruiti a tavolino (6/7).

Era atteso da orde schiumanti di post-millennials anche “Forever Isn’t Long Enough” (AWAL Recordings Ltd • 8t-30:01) del chiacchierato inglesino Alfie Templeman (classe 2003) che aveva fatto parlare di sé (lasciando intravvedere qualcosa di buono) con la cliccatissima Stop Thinking (About Me) sfornata quando aveva ancora sedici anni. L’album è un concentrato di quello che “before it was mainstream” era l’umore vaporwave/chillwave di qualche annetto fa e che viene qui centrifugato, rimasticato e risputato in modo del tutto conformista, mutuato sotto la recente lezione di The Weeknd (anche se lì i risultati sono alt(r)i grazie anche a un certo Daniel Lopatin alla consolle). Suonano molto posticce queste basi mid-tempo funkeggianti dove paradossalmente, come noblesse oblige in (super)produzioni di questo tipo, è difficile trovare una mezza canzoncina da cantare sotto la doccia. Con poche varianti sul tema (l’introversa One More Day è la cosa più riuscita), sembra una suite lunga 30 minuti anche se il risultato temo non dovesse essere questo. Alfie pecca di hybris pensando che il groove e il lavorio dietro al mixer valgano più della scrittura in sé stessa, peccato esiziale commesso non solo da lui ma da una schiera di giovani producers contemporanei che molto spesso scompaiono, non a caso, in un battito di un ciglio. Parafrasando il titolo: ancora il ragazzo ha tutto il tempo a sufficienza per fare sicuramente di meglio. (5) Marco Giappichini

a/lpaca • Make It Better

We Were Never Being Boring Collective • 9 t-41:00

Grazie al cielo di italiano hanno ben poco questi a/lpaca da Mantova che cantano in un gracchiante inglese credibile e tirano dritti come un fuso tra space-rock, kraut e garage psichedelico. Un’ira di dio insomma. L’illuminazione discende direttamente dai padri putativi del genere (Hawkwind e Stooges su tutti) ma non vengono affatto disdegnate le nuove varianti sul tema (Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall e soprattutto King Gizzard nel cantato). Il disco di debutto ruota intorno al concetto di beat e sull’importanza purificatrice e rigenerante del ritmo: concetti espressi senza troppi giri di parole, ma con la sola forza evocativa della propria potenza, nell’uno/due di Beat Club e Make it Better. La tensione si taglia con un coltello e non fai in tempo da rialzarti dal K.O. di questi incendiari twist iniziali che partono danze innodiche tramutatesi in riti orgiastici (Inept), boogie mefistofelici da ballare intorno a un fuoco sacro (Hypnosis), motorik ballati da dervishi che ruotano per le troppe sostanze psicotrope assunte (Chameleon) e stralunate filastrocche muscolari dove il titolo ti fa capire subito dove andiamo a parare (I Am Kevin Ayers). Il catatonico finale di Lokomitiv è l’esatto opposto di quello che definiresti un happy end (ma sinceramente non ci avevamo neanche sperato). Le cose belle non hanno patria e difatti Make It Better esce e viene distribuito da una label italo-statunitense, una tedesca e una inglese. Non rimane altro che augurargli spassionatamente di farsi abbracciare prima possibile dai club di mezza Europa e non solo (7/8). Marco Giappichini
